What a furnace and AC replacement costs in Ontario

Replacing a gas furnace and central AC together typically costs $8,000 to $15,000 installed, before HST. The equipment tiers you choose set most of the spread. One request on FurnaceQuotes.ca covers both units.

New furnace and central AC in one job

The combined range covers better equipment too, so it is not a straight discount. One job saves on labour and repeated work.

Why one job usually beats two

Replaced on different dates, some of the work gets done twice. Doing both at once removes the repeats and lets the installer match every part.

What matching means, in plain words

A central AC has two halves: a condenser outside and a coil inside, on the furnace. Its rated efficiency only holds when those parts and the furnace blower are designed to work together.

How a furnace and central air conditioner connect Indoors, the coil sits on top of the furnace below the supply duct, and a wall thermostat controls both. Two copper refrigerant lines run from the coil through the outside wall to the condenser on its pad. InsideOutside 12345
  1. 1

    Furnace blower

Pushes air across the coil. It must move the airflow the AC needs, roughly 400 cubic feet per minute per ton.

  2. 2

    Indoor coil

Sits on the furnace. It should match the condenser's capacity and the cabinet's width.

  3. 3

    Line set

Two copper pipes to the condenser. Reuse only if they are the right size, cleaned and pressure tested. Off an old R-22 system, many installers replace them.

  4. 4

    Condenser

Its SEER2 rating holds only for a specific coil and furnace. The AHRI reference number proves the match.

  5. 5

    Thermostat

Has to run the furnace stages and the AC.

When to replace both at once

Do both when the AC is near the end of its life anyway, or when a furnace swap would disturb a coil you will replace soon.

Signs it is time for both

  • Your AC is 12 to 15 years old or more
  • It uses R-22, common before about 2010. R-22 is no longer made, so recharges are scarce and costly
  • You are replacing the furnace this year anyway
  • The AC needs a compressor, typically $1,800 to $3,500 on its own
  • Upstairs rooms never cool properly

When the AC can stay

Under about 10 years old, running well, coil fits the new cabinet? A furnace-only replacement is usually fine. Ask for the coil fit in writing.

Consider a heat pump or dual fuel instead

If your AC is due, a heat pump can cool in summer and heat for much of the year. With your gas furnace as backup, a dual fuel system typically runs $11,000 to $20,000 installed.

Furnace and central AC: $8,000 to $15,000

  • Gas heats the home all winter
  • The AC only cools
  • Lower upfront cost

Heat pump with gas backup: $11,000 to $20,000

  • The heat pump cools and heats in milder weather
  • The furnace takes over in deep cold
  • Can be eligible for heat pump rebates, with approval before installation
  • Higher upfront cost and electricity use

What the quote should list for each unit

Three pieces of equipment means three model numbers. Without them you cannot check the match or compare quotes like for like.

How the install days run

Most pairs take one long day or two shorter ones. Heat and cooling are off while the crew works, so plan around the weather.

  1. Out with the old

    Refrigerant recovered, both units removed.

  2. Furnace and coil

    Set, sealed, vented and drained.

  3. Condenser and line set

Outdoor unit placed, lines connected, disconnect wired.

  4. Leak test and vacuum

Lines pressure tested and pulled into a deep vacuum before the refrigerant is released.

  5. Start-up

Combustion, airflow and charge checked, thermostat set, then a walkthrough.

Rebates and gas safety

Do not plan on a rebate for a furnace and AC pair. Gas work is for a TSSA-registered contractor only.

Rebates: check before you sign

Heat pump rebates do not cover a standalone gas furnace or a cooling-only air conditioner, so do not count on a rebate for a straight furnace or AC replacement.

Ontario's Home Renovation Savings program offers heat pump rebates with eligibility rules by heating fuel, home type and product, and it requires approval before installation. Program rules change often, so check the official pages before you buy and never sign because of a promised rebate amount. New applications for the Canada Greener Homes Loan ended on October 1, 2025.

Gas work in Ontario

In Ontario, only a TSSA-registered contractor, using certified gas technicians, may install or repair gas appliances. Ask for the company's TSSA registration number and the technician's certificate before work starts. We do not certify, license or inspect any company.

Common questions

Straight answers. If yours is not here, the company can answer it during your free estimate.

How much does it cost to replace a furnace and AC together in Ontario?

The typical installed price for both is $8,000 to $15,000 before HST. Single-stage furnaces with standard ACs sit near the bottom, two-stage or modulating furnaces with variable-speed ACs near the top. Venting, ductwork, the line set and electrical work move the final number.

Does replacing the furnace and AC together save money?

Usually it costs less in labour than two separate jobs, because the coil, removal and start-up are done once. It is not always cheaper in total, since many people pick better equipment when doing both. Ask for a combined price and a furnace-only price from the same visit.

Can I keep my old AC with a new furnace?

Usually, as long as the AC is healthy and its indoor coil suits the new furnace cabinet. The installer lifts the coil, sets the new furnace and reconnects it. An AC older than about 12 to 15 years, or one on R-22, is usually worth replacing at the same time.

What SEER2 rating should I look for?

A standard AC of about 14.3 SEER2 typically costs $3,800 to $7,000 installed, and high-efficiency or variable-speed models $6,500 to $10,500. Southern Ontario's cooling season is short, so pay extra for quieter cooling and humidity control rather than big hydro savings. The rating only holds with a matched coil.

How long does a furnace and AC replacement take?

Most pairs are done in one to two days. A straight swap that reuses the line set can finish in a long day. New venting through a wall, duct changes, a new line set run or extra electrical work usually push it into a second day.
