Is your Mississauga home due?

Start with when the house was built, then read the labels. The rating plates on the furnace and the outdoor unit show model and serial numbers, and an installer can date both from them.

What Mississauga quotes often involve, by when the home was built. A guide, not a rule: every house differs.

Furnace and AC together, or one at a time?

If both are past their middle years, replacing them together is usually the better buy. The furnace blower, the indoor coil and the outdoor unit are rated as a matched set, and one visit means one round of duct, electrical and refrigerant work.

Replace both now when

  • Both units are about the same age and past mid-life
  • The AC uses R-22 refrigerant, which most units installed before about 2010 do
  • You want two-stage or variable-speed comfort, which works best as a matched set
  • The coil on top of the furnace has to come off anyway

Replace one now when

  • The other unit is under about 10 years old and working well
  • The installer confirms in writing that the new unit matches the one you keep
  • Budget is tight this year and you plan the second one within a few seasons

Townhouse complexes: read the condo rules first

Many Mississauga townhouses belong to a condominium corporation, and the outside of the unit is often a common element. That decides where equipment can go and who approves it.

Ask the property manager

  • Where the outdoor AC or heat pump may sit, and whether it can move from the old spot
  • Whether a new vent or line set through an outside wall needs board approval
  • Noise, screening and colour rules for outdoor units
  • Who repairs brick, siding or roofing around a new opening
  • Any insurance certificate, notice period or approved contractor list

Get the answers in writing before the estimate, so the quote prices what the board will actually allow. Freehold townhouses skip the board but still share walls and tight side yards, so vent placement needs the same care.

Many high-rise condos use in-suite fan coils or heat pumps tied to the building's own system. Those follow the corporation's rules, so start with your property manager.

Good signs and warning signs on a Mississauga quote

Most homes here are pricing a furnace, an AC or both. These are the lines that separate a complete quote from a quick one.

Ask before you sign

  • Sized "same as before"

A 1980s house with new windows and insulation may need less capacity than it has.

  • No brand or model

You cannot compare two quotes that only say "high-efficiency system".

  • A discount that expires today

A fair price is still fair next week.

  • Rental pushed before a purchase price

Ask for both and compare the total cost.

Good signs

  • Model numbers for the furnace, coil and outdoor unit

With an AHRI reference number that proves the three are a matched set.

  • A load calculation

Room by room (CSA F280), so the AC and furnace are sized for the house, not copied from the old labels.

  • A line set plan

Reuse, flush or replace the copper lines, with a pressure test either way.

  • The extras spelled out

Electrical disconnect, pad, condensate, permits and removal of the old equipment.

When to book in Mississauga

April, May and September are the easiest months for a pair replacement: the furnace is not needed and the AC is not running. The first summer heat wave fills AC calendars, and furnace demand climbs from October through January.

A furnace and AC pair usually takes one long day, sometimes two if ducts or the line set change. If the heat is out in winter, choose Urgent in the form.

Use the same request anywhere in the city, including Port Credit, Streetsville, Meadowvale and Erin Mills. Near the city line? See Oakville to the west, Brampton to the north, or all city pages.

Common questions

Straight answers. If yours is not here, the company can answer it during your free estimate.

Should I replace my furnace and AC at the same time?

If both are original or more than about 15 years old, usually yes. A matched furnace, coil and outdoor unit is rated and warrantied as a set, and you pay for one round of duct, electrical and refrigerant work instead of two. If one unit is under 10 years old, replacing only the other can make sense.

Does my condo corporation have to approve a new AC?

In many Mississauga townhouse complexes, yes, if the work touches the outside of the unit. Moving the outdoor unit, adding a wall opening or changing a vent location usually needs approval. Ask the property manager for the rules in writing before your estimate, and mention them in your request.

Do I need a permit for a furnace or AC in Mississauga?

Check with the City of Mississauga, since it depends on the work. The quote should say who applies for any permit and whether the fee is included. Gas work needs a TSSA-registered contractor, and new electrical work for an outdoor unit is filed with the Electrical Safety Authority.

Is my old air conditioner worth repairing?

If it was installed before about 2010, it most likely uses R-22, a refrigerant no longer used in new equipment and costly to top up. A small electrical fix such as a capacitor, typically $150 to $350, can be worth it. A refrigerant leak or a failed compressor on an R-22 unit usually is not.

Is a heat pump an option in a 1980s Mississauga home?

Often, yes. Most homes of that era have ducts a cold-climate heat pump can use, though some need duct changes or an electrical upgrade. Many owners keep a gas furnace as backup, called dual fuel. Ask for a load calculation so the heat pump is sized for the house, not copied from the old AC.
