Check one quote against typical Ontario prices

How to fill it in from a real quote

Work from the written quote or email, line by line. Allow about five minutes per quote.

  1. Use the price before HST

Most Ontario furnace quotes show a subtotal, then 13% HST. If yours shows only a total with tax, divide it by 1.13: a $7,910 total is $7,000 before HST.

  2. Copy the model number exactly

A brand name is not enough: one brand sells furnaces thousands of dollars apart. No model number? Type "not listed" and ask for it.

  3. Record efficiency and size as written

AFUE for a furnace (95 to 98% on new gas models), SEER2 for an AC, BTU or tons for size. Very different sizes for one house mean someone did not measure.

  4. Split the warranty in two

Parts coverage comes from the manufacturer and often needs registration within a set time. Labour coverage comes from the installer.

  5. Choose Yes only when it is in writing

Pick Yes only if the quote lists the item. "That is all included" said out loud stays Not stated until it is written down.

What to compare beyond the price

Two quotes are only comparable when they describe the same job.

  • How the furnace was sized

A heat loss calculation (CSA F280) sizes the furnace for your house. "Same size as the old one" repeats any old mistake.

  • The type of furnace

Installed, expect $4,000 to $6,500 for single-stage, $5,500 to $8,000 for two-stage and $7,000 to $11,000 for modulating. Compare like with like.

  • Venting and condensate

High-efficiency furnaces need their own PVC intake and exhaust, plus a drain or pump for condensate. Missing venting is a common later extra.

  • Duct connections

A new cabinet rarely lines up with the old plenums. Transitions and sealing belong on the quote, not the final invoice.

  • Permits and gas work

Ask who arranges any permit (typically $75 to $300) and for the company's TSSA registration number for the gas work.

  • Warranty and price hold

Ten years of parts coverage with registration is common; labour coverage varies far more. Note how long each price holds.

Why missing items matter

A missing line is either included and unwritten, or an extra that arrives later. The quote alone cannot tell you which.

Duct connectionsIncludedNot stated
If Quote B adds typical venting and duct work$6,400$6,500 to $10,200+

The "cheaper" quote can end up $100 to $3,800+ more than Quote A. That is why the summary flags any quote that leaves venting, duct connections, permits, removal or a heat loss calculation as No or Not stated. Get those confirmed in writing before you compare totals.

We treat a price gap over 20% as a sign the quotes cover different work, not that one company is simply cheaper. Our list of furnace quote red flags covers the other warning signs.

Print a blank copy and fill it in while the estimator is in your home. Asking about each row shows you are comparing.

Common questions

Straight answers. If yours is not here, the company can answer it during your free estimate.

Is anything I type sent to FurnaceQuotes.ca?

No. The worksheet saves to this browser on this device, and nothing leaves your computer or phone. Another device will not see it, and a private window may forget it when closed. Select Clear all to wipe it on a shared computer.

Should I just pick the cheapest furnace quote?

Only once the scopes match. Fill in every row, then ask the cheaper company to confirm in writing anything marked No or Not stated. If the price holds with the same equipment, sizing and inclusions, it is a fair choice. If it rises, you know why it was cheaper.

Can I use it for AC, heat pump or boiler quotes?

Yes. Enter SEER2 for an air conditioner, SEER2 and HSPF2 for a heat pump, AFUE for a boiler, and tons or BTU for size. An air conditioner or heat pump has no venting, so mark that row No and ignore its flag.

How do I compare a quote that includes HST with one that does not?

Turn every quote into the price before HST. Ontario HST is 13%, so divide a tax-included total by 1.13: $9,040 with HST is $8,000 before it. The summary works from before-HST prices and shows the lowest one with HST added back.
